Subject: FTP (File Transfer Protocol)
1) FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol, what it is the Protocol for transferring files to and from the Internet. Also called uploading and downloading, it works the same as HTTP does for web pages.
2) Like with web pages and its HTTP://, the FTP:// is its way of identifying what protocol is used to construct the URL has to do to open the page. Http = Hyper text transfer protocol, as like I said FTP = File transfer protocol. Look at it this way, the URL protocols such as Http FTP and so on are the keys to the doors to your car… where you have a key for your driver and passenger door as well as your trunk. Lets say Http is your driver and passenger doors, and Ftp is your trunk… you want to show someone the new building (site) you would use the HTTP URL to get them there… where as FTP would be used to show the new PS3 game(file) in your briefcase that’s in your trunk for safe keeping and let him have the extra copy you didn’t know you bought.
3) An FTP client allows you to connect to an FTP server, where an FTP server is where all the information is stored.
4) Ok pertaining to Upload and Download, Upload is like you transfer something from your computer to a server for future downloading. Download is where you take a file from a server to your computer. For example you have a paper you want to give to some one like a word document aka .doc you upload it to the server and the person downloads it from the server.
5) In order to connect to a FTP server you would have to download an FTP client. Second you authenticate by ither a email address for a public FTP. Where as if your are using a Privite FTP server you would need a Username as well as a password given to you by the admin of the server.
6) Depending on what operating system you run there are numerus clients out there I will post three sites for you for each OS there is Linux, Windows, and MAC.
·
http://www.bpftp.com/ this one can be used for both windows or MAC OS given which one you download. It also looks widely used
· Another widely used one by its looks is also
http://cws.internet.com/category/2244-1-d.htm it is only for windows though.
· The last one I will let you look at for windows is this one http://www.ipswitch.com/ it not only looks widely used but widely used by businesses.
· Now for Mac
http://www.pure-mac.com/ftp.html this one has a variety of Mac FTP servers. And looks used frequently.
·
http://www.macworld.com/2003/09/reviews/ftpclients/ this site has seven for Mac’s OS x and even gives the price for them… it is used more than the one above by the looks.

· This one has to be widely used for Mac given the awards it has been given
http://www.panic.com/transmit/ it also has plenty of features
. Now for Linux…
http://linuxreviews.org/software/ftp-clients/ this site gives you a rating of the FTP clients out there for Linux and it will be the only one I will add for Linux given how it is set up.
